Frequently Asked Questions
What is an EICR and do I need one?
An Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) is a formal inspection and test of an existing electrical installation that reports its condition and safety against BS 7671. It identifies deterioration, defects, and any dangerous conditions, coding each observation by severity. Landlords of private rented homes in England are legally required to hold a satisfactory EICR renewed at least every five years, and many insurers and commercial licences require periodic reports too. Even where it is not mandatory, an EICR every ten years for an owner-occupied home is good practice — and essential when buying an older property.
Does my consumer unit (fuse board) need upgrading?
Possibly. If you still have an old rewireable-fuse or plastic-cased board without RCD protection, an upgrade significantly improves safety by providing fast disconnection against electric shock and fire. The 18th Edition requires RCD protection on most circuits, surge protection in many cases, and non-combustible (metal) enclosures in domestic premises. Signs you may need an upgrade include frequent tripping, a lack of RCDs, rewireable fuses, or plans to add an EV charger or major circuit. We assess your board during a survey and only recommend an upgrade where it is genuinely warranted.
Can you install an EV charger at my home?
Yes. Only a Part P competent, registered electrician may legally install an EV charge point in the UK, because it involves adding a new dedicated, notifiable circuit. We carry out a load assessment to confirm your supply and consumer unit can support the charger, install the unit to BS 7671 Section 722 with the correct earthing and protection, and notify Building Control and issue certification. We fit smart, app-controlled 7 kW and 22 kW chargers sited for convenient, safe charging.
What does Part P and NICEIC registration mean for me?
Part P of the Building Regulations requires that notifiable electrical work in a dwelling is carried out by a competent person and notified to Building Control. As a NICEIC-registered contractor we are a member of a government-authorised Competent Person Scheme, which means we can self-certify our work — we notify Building Control on your behalf and issue the compliance certificate directly, saving you the time and cost of arranging a separate Building Control inspection. It also gives you the assurance that our work has been independently assessed against BS 7671.
How long does a rewire take and how disruptive is it?
It depends on the size of the property and whether it is occupied. As a rough guide, a typical three-bedroom house takes around five to ten working days. Rewiring involves lifting floorboards, chasing walls for cables, and temporary loss of power to areas being worked on, so there is some disruption — but we plan the work in stages, protect your property, and leave it clean and tidy each day. Where a full rewire is not necessary, a partial rewire of specific circuits is far less disruptive. We give you a clear schedule and scope before we start.
