Our Solar PV and Electrical Services
Solar PV Installation
Grid-connected solar photovoltaic systems for domestic and commercial properties.
- Domestic solar — roof-mounted panels sized to your energy consumption profile. Typical residential systems range from 3.6 kWp (approximately 8–10 panels) to 7 kWp+, depending on roof area, orientation, and budget. We handle the full process from design (shading analysis, pitch and orientation optimisation, SAP assessment) through to MCS registration and SEG application so you earn from your exported electricity.
- Commercial solar — larger arrays on factory roofs, office buildings, agricultural buildings, and ground-mount sites. We manage DNO (Distribution Network Operator) applications, structural loading assessments, and three-phase integration. Commercial systems often achieve payback within 4–7 years, with panel warranties of 25–30 years producing free electricity for decades thereafter.
- In-roof and integrated systems — flush-mounted panels using GSE or similar integrated tray systems for a sleek, low-profile finish on new builds and refurbishments.
Every installation includes: MCS certificate, Part P building regulations compliance, DC and AC isolation, generation meter, and handover documentation pack.
Battery Storage Systems
Store surplus solar generation for use when the sun is not shining, or charge from the grid on an off-peak tariff to use during peak-rate hours.
- AC-coupled batteries — retrofit to existing solar PV systems without altering the existing inverter. Ideal for adding storage to a system installed years ago.
- DC-coupled / hybrid systems — single inverter handling both solar and battery, maximising round-trip efficiency. Our preferred configuration for new installations.
- Whole-home backup — selected batteries (such as Tesla Powerwall and GivEnergy All-in-One) can provide backup power during grid outages via an emergency power supply (EPS) circuit.
- Capacity sizing — from compact 2.6 kWh modules up to multi-unit stacks exceeding 20 kWh. We model your consumption and generation data to size the battery correctly.
EV Charger Installation
Future-proof your property with a smart EV charge point.
- Residential chargers — 7 kW single-phase Type 2 chargers from Ohme, Zappi (myenergi), Hypervolt, and Tesla Wall Connector. All OZEV-approved models eligible for the now-sunset grant schemes on existing eligible properties (we advise on current availability). Smart chargers schedule charging for cheapest electricity and can integrate with solar diverters.
- Commercial and workplace chargers — 7 kW, 22 kW, and rapid DC units. Load management across multiple bays, RFID or app-based access control, billing and reporting. Future-proof infrastructure cabling for additional bays.
- Pen protection — built-in Type A RCD + 6 mA DC leakage detection, open-PEN detection for PME earthing arrangements, and compliance with BS 7671 Section 722.
Electrical Installation and Testing
NICEIC-registered electrical services for residential and commercial clients.
- EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report) — mandatory for rental properties (every 5 years or change of tenancy in England), recommended for all properties every 10 years (5 years for rented). We inspect and test all circuits, consumer unit, earthing and bonding, and provide a detailed report with observations coded C1 (danger present), C2 (potentially dangerous), C3 (improvement recommended), and FI (further investigation).
- Consumer unit (fuse board) upgrades — replace old wire-fused or non-RCD-protected units with modern metal-clad consumer units incorporating RCBOs and surge protection (SPD) compliant with BS 7671 Amendment 2.
- Rewiring — full or partial rewires for properties with rubber, fabric, or lead-sheathed cabling, or where PVC cabling has deteriorated. Minimal disruption techniques wherever possible.
- Additional sockets, lighting, circuits — new ring mains, downlight installation, outdoor power and lighting, kitchen and bathroom electrical works.
- Periodic inspection and testing — commercial and industrial fixed-wire testing (EICR) for offices, retail, schools, and factories.
Standards and Certifications
| Certification | What It Means |
|---|---|
| MCS | Microgeneration Certification Scheme. MCS-certified installations are eligible for Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) payments from energy suppliers. Assurance of quality design, installation, and handover. |
| NICEIC Registered | National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting. UK’s leading electrical competent person scheme. All work notified to building control and backed by the NICEIC platinum promise. |
| BS 7671 | The IET Wiring Regulations (18th Edition, Amendment 2). All our electrical work complies fully. |
| Part P | Building Regulations covering electrical safety in dwellings. All notifiable work self-certified. |
Frequently Asked Questions
Is solar PV worth it in the UK?
Yes. Despite the UK’s reputation for grey skies, modern solar panels work on daylight — not just direct sunshine — and the economics stack up strongly. A typical 4 kWp residential system in southern England generates around 3,400–3,800 kWh per year. With a household consuming perhaps 50% of that directly and exporting the rest under SEG, annual savings plus export payments typically total around £500–£900, depending on electricity tariff, consumption patterns, and SEG rate. Payback periods generally range from 6–10 years for an unsubsidised system with a 25+ year design life, meaning 15+ years of effectively free electricity after break-even. Add battery storage and you shift more consumption to your own generation, improving the return.
What maintenance does a solar PV system need?
Very little. Panels have no moving parts and require no routine servicing. We recommend an annual visual check for debris, shading from growing vegetation, and any signs of physical damage. In most UK locations, rainfall keeps panels reasonably clean; a professional clean every 2–4 years may be beneficial in particularly dusty or bird-fouled areas, or if performance monitoring shows an unexplained drop. Inverters typically need replacement once during the system’s life — around year 10–15. We offer annual system health checks that verify generation against expected output, test DC and AC isolation, and inspect all connections.
What is the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG)?
The SEG is a government-mandated scheme requiring energy suppliers with over 150,000 customers to offer an export tariff for small-scale low-carbon generation. Your electricity supplier pays you for each kWh you export to the grid. Rates vary by supplier — typically 3p–15p per kWh at the time of writing, with some offering higher rates for their own customers. Your installation must be MCS-certified (or equivalent) and fitted with a compliant generation meter. We handle the MCS registration and provide all documentation needed for your SEG application.
How long does a solar PV installation take?
A typical domestic installation (10–14 panels on a pitched roof) takes one to two days on site. Scaffolding is erected a day or two beforehand and removed shortly after. Larger commercial installations may take one to three weeks depending on scale. Most of the preparatory work — design, structural assessment, DNO application — happens before we arrive on site, so your disruption is minimal. All installations are commissioned, tested, and demonstrated before we leave.
How do I choose between solar, battery storage, and an EV charger?
Start with your energy priorities. If reducing your electricity bill is the main driver, solar PV typically offers the best standalone return because panels are relatively inexpensive and generate for decades. Battery storage works best paired with solar — it captures excess generation for evening use — but can also work standalone if you are on a time-of-use tariff with cheap overnight electricity. An EV charger is essential if you have or plan to get an electric vehicle; smart chargers with solar integration (like the Zappi) can divert surplus solar to your car rather than exporting it cheaply. Our survey includes a full discussion of your consumption patterns, roof suitability, and budget so we can recommend the right combination.
