Frequently Asked Questions
Can I view my CCTV on my phone?
Yes, absolutely. All our IP-based CCTV systems include remote viewing as standard. You install the manufacturer’s app (or a unified platform app), scan a QR code generated by the installer, and have live and recorded footage on your phone or tablet. You can receive push notifications for motion events, line-crossing, or other analytics triggers. Multiple users can have independent logins with different permissions — for example, the security manager sees all cameras while area supervisors see only their designated zones. Remote access is configured securely with end-to-end encryption and two-factor authentication options.
Does my intruder alarm need monitoring?
Not necessarily — a bells-only (audible) alarm is sufficient for many domestic and low-risk commercial premises. However, if you require a police response, your alarm must be monitored by an NSI-certified alarm receiving centre using confirmed alarm technology (two separate detection events before signalling). Insurers often mandate monitored alarms for higher-risk or higher-value premises. Alarm monitoring also ensures someone is alerted even if no one is nearby to hear the siren. We can discuss the appropriate level during your site survey.
What is access control?
Access control is a system that manages who can enter specific areas and when. At its simplest, it replaces keys with electronic credentials — fobs, cards, codes, or biometrics — that can be issued, restricted, and revoked centrally. Unlike keys, credentials cannot be copied easily, and every entry event is logged. Modern systems range from a single-door keypad to enterprise platforms managing thousands of users across dozens of sites. Access control eliminates the risk of lost or unreturned keys, gives you an indisputable audit trail, and allows you to set time-based access rules — for example, cleaning staff can only enter between 18:00 and 22:00.
How long should CCTV footage be kept?
There is no fixed statutory retention period for CCTV footage in the UK. The ICO recommends keeping footage for as short a period as necessary to serve its purpose — typically 31 days is a sensible default for general surveillance. However, you may need a longer retention period if footage is required as evidence in an investigation or subject access request, or if you operate in a sector with specific regulatory requirements (for example, financial services or licensed premises). Our NVRs are configured to overwrite automatically on a first-in-first-out basis, and we can set retention periods per camera if needed.
Do I need signage for CCTV?
Yes. Under UK GDPR and the ICO’s guidance, you must inform people that CCTV is in operation. Signage must be clearly visible and legible, state the organisation operating the cameras, and provide contact details for the data controller. Covert surveillance (without signage) requires a very high bar of authorisation — specific and time-limited investigations with a defined outcome, not routine monitoring. We supply compliant signage as part of every CCTV installation and can advise on appropriate placement.
What ongoing maintenance does a security system need?
All systems should receive preventative maintenance at least annually; for intruder alarms with police URN, bi-annual maintenance is mandatory under NPCC requirements. A maintenance visit includes: battery load-testing and replacement where necessary, walk-testing every detector, cleaning camera lenses and housings, checking all connections, testing communication paths, applying firmware updates, and reviewing event logs for anomalies. Systems that are not maintained degrade over time — sensors drift, batteries fail, hard drives develop bad sectors, and firmware vulnerabilities go unpatched. A maintenance contract also gives you priority call-out for fault rectification.
