Legal Obligations
Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005
Articles 21 and 22 of the RRFSO expressly require that employees receive adequate safety training. Specifically:
- On induction: When a person starts employment, they must be provided with comprehensible and relevant fire safety information and instruction.
- On exposure to new or increased risks: Where work processes, equipment, or building layout changes.
- Periodically: Training must be repeated as appropriate to maintain competence.
- For those with special roles: Fire wardens, marshals, and those assisting with evacuation of disabled persons must receive additional training specific to their duties.
BS 5839-1:2025 Competence Requirements
The latest revision of BS 5839-1 (Fire detection and fire alarm systems for buildings) reinforces the importance of trained personnel. A fire alarm system is only as effective as the people operating it — keyholders, alarm responders, and those responsible for silencing or resetting panels must understand the system, the evacuation strategy, and their role within it.

Fire Warden / Marshal Training (Half-Day)
A comprehensive 3–4 hour course for designated fire wardens and marshals. Content includes:
- The role and responsibilities of a fire warden under the RRFSO
- Fire science and behaviour — how fire develops and spreads
- Fire prevention — identifying and managing fire hazards in the workplace
- Human behaviour in fire — how people react and how to manage it
- Evacuation procedures, including Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans (PEEPs)
- Practical walk-round — inspecting your premises with fresh eyes
- Fire extinguisher theory and selection
- Daily, weekly, and monthly fire safety checks the warden should carry out
- Record-keeping and the fire log book
Each participant receives a certificate of attendance and a course handbook.
General Staff Fire Awareness (2 Hours)
An engaging awareness session suitable for all employees. Covers:
- Common causes of workplace fires
- Basic fire prevention measures
- What to do on discovering a fire
- How to raise the alarm
- Evacuation procedures and assembly points
- The different classes of fire and extinguisher types (theory)
- The importance of good housekeeping
Ideal for annual refresher training and as part of your induction programme.
Practical Fire Extinguisher Training
Hands-on extinguisher training using environmentally friendly gas-fired training rigs (or live fire where site conditions permit). Delegates practice:
- Selecting the correct extinguisher for the fire class
- Safe approach and positioning
- The PASS technique (Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep)
- Extinguishing controlled fires under instructor supervision

Emergency Evacuation Drills

Frequently Asked Questions
Is fire safety training a legal requirement?
Yes. The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 mandates that employers provide their employees with adequate fire safety training at the time of recruitment, on being exposed to new risks, and periodically thereafter. Fire wardens and marshals must receive additional training specific to their duties. Training must be provided during working hours and at no cost to employees.
How often should fire safety training be refreshed?
At minimum, annual refresher training is recommended for all staff. Fire warden and marshal training should be revisited every 12–18 months. You should also retrain sooner following any significant change — a new building, revised evacuation strategy, installation of new fire safety systems, or an actual fire or near-miss incident. Some insurers and enforcing authorities specify more frequent intervals; check your policy and any enforcement history.
Does my business need a fire warden?
The RRFSO does not prescribe a fixed ratio, but the responsible person must appoint a sufficient number of competent persons to assist with evacuation. As a rule of thumb, you need enough wardens to sweep all areas of your premises quickly and account for absences (holidays, sickness, shift patterns). A typical guidance is one warden per 20–25 staff on each floor, with a minimum of two to cover absence. We can advise on an appropriate number during your fire risk assessment or as part of your training needs analysis.
What is the difference between a fire warden and a fire marshal?
In UK practice, the terms are used interchangeably by most organisations, though some distinguish them: a fire warden focuses on routine fire safety checks, prevention, and coordination of day-to-day fire safety; a fire marshal takes the active role during an evacuation — sweeping areas, directing people to exits, and reporting to the incident controller. Our half-day course covers both roles comprehensively.
